Trafficking in Persons - Modern Slave Trade

Modern-Day Slavery

http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/rm/43617.htm

"Slavery still flourishes in the 21st century. It's got a different name. It's called trafficking in persons...traffickers today use many of the same tools: kidnapping, fraud, threats and beatings all aimed, just as in earlier centuries at forcing men, women and children into labor and sex exploitation."

Trafficking in Women for the Purpose of Sexual Exploitation

"Trafficking in women and girls for the purpose of sexual exploitation is a growing phenomenon around the world. In Western Europe alone, the International Organisation for Migration estimates that around 500,000 women per year are trafficked from poorer regions in the world."

What is modern slavery?

"Millions of men, women and children around the world are forced to lead lives as slaves. Although this exploitation is often not called slavery, the conditions are the same. People are sold like objects, forced to work for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their 'employers'.

Slavery exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most of the countries where it is practised. It is also prohibited by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1956 UN Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery."

Introduction to Modern Slavery

"Slaves are subjected to all these conditions, but additionally they have lost their free will — they cannot walk away. Most slaves are paid nothing at all, and the physical and psychological violence used against them is so complete that they cannot escape their condition as a slave."

"What the report has revealed, however, is that from start to finish the process is anything but willing."
